Institutional arguments in organization theory make analytically central the familiar questions of ideology. And in fact the theory and arguments in several important strands of institutional analysis draw directly from sociology of knowledge, studies in ideology and crisis, cultural analysis, and studies of states and professions, and related scholarship. This volume represents an effort to refocus and revitalize such issues, building in particular from the 1991 essay by Friedland and Alford, "Bringing society back in" and other key texts in the tradition, from Berger and Luckmann, to the work of Mary Douglas, the work of Hughes, Becker, Schutz and others, contemporary social theory from Bourdieu, Joas, and Habermas, to the classics in Weber, Simmel, Gramsci, Selznick and others.
Our focus is on theory-generative and empirical papers, as well as work on methodological issues, that explore and reconnect foundational and current work on ideology with the analytic vocabulary of organizational institutionalism: Collective rationalities, dominant logics and plural logics, institutional practices, organizational "charters" and "character", identity, classification and categories, meaning systems, legitimacy, and institutionalization and its variants.
If you have on-going work in these issues, we would be glad to consider a submission. We anticipate having 10 substantive articles in the volume. We will invite 5-6 chapters from colleagues with already established work in these areas. With this call, we are inviting submission of substantive abstracts to identify another 4-5 contributions.
Please contact us with any questions. We look forward to knowing about your work.
