We intend for discussions to wrestle anew with the epistemology of institutionalization across various social levels, sectors, and regions and locales and to the ontology of institutions in relation to the place that identity and materiality, as both constructs and processes, take in institutions. We welcome papers that offer new methods of institutional analysis, as well as papers that provide fresh insights for classic formulations. We invite colleagues to contribute to this discussion with essays and research that offer a vision of the conceptual, empirical and methodological trajectories of institutional theory. more... |

![]() Research on family firms has accelerated over the past decades but much existing theory focuses upon factors internal to the family and firm such as their governance structure and family members’ emotional attachments to the firm. Yet family firms operate in divergent cultural and institutional contexts around the world. While scholars studying Asian family firms have begun to explore institutional effects (e.g. Luo & Chung, 2013) research employing institutional perspectives is sparse. The absence of institutional theories of organization, family, and context limit our understanding of this prevalent organizational form. We therefore call for researchers to develop institutional theories of family firms with different levels of analysis. more... |

Research organizations have to face two challenges. They should, on the one hand, establish and support new research areas according to scientific advances. On the other hand, they are expected to foster institutional change in the organization of research. Based on neo-institutional research in the field of higher education and science, different aspects of “the institutional renewal of research” – like the German Excellence Initiative, mergers among universities or the increasing relevance of management in higher education and science – are discussed in this volume. more... |

![]() We invite papers that offer ways to bridge the divides within institutional theory, whether with a theoretical, conceptual, methodological and/or empirical focus. While these may include critical reviews of the literature, highlighting divides and charting new theoretical and methodological roads for paradigmatic integration, we are mainly looking for empirical works that exemplify such integration – empirical works that draw upon multiple methods and engage cross-level processes, thus highlighting the bridging that we seek.
